Ray Optics and Optical Instruments Class 12 Assertion Reason Questions

The following questions consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer these questions by selecting the appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false and R is also false.

Assertion (A) : Higher is the refractive index of a medium or denser the medium, lesser is the velocity of light in that medium.
Reason (R) : Refractive index is inversely proportional to velocity.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

Assertion (A) : Endoscopy involves use of optical fibres to study internal organs.
Reason (R) : Optical fibres are based on phenomena of total internal reflection.

(d) A is false and R is also false.

Assertion (A) : If optical density of a substance is more than that of water, then the mass density of substance can be less than water.
Reason (R) : Optical density and mass density are not related.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

Assertion (A) : Microscope magnifies the image.
Reason (R) : Angular magnification for image is more than object in microscope.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

Assertion : Plane mirror may form real image.
Reason : Plane mirror forms virtual image, if object is real.

(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.

Assertion : The optical instruments are used to increase the size of the image of the object.
Reason : The optical instruments are used to increase the visual angle.

(d) A is false and R is also false.

Assertion : The resolving power of a telescope is more if the diameter of the objective lens is more.
Reason : Objective lens of large diameter collects more light.

(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A

Assertion : If the rays are diverging after emerging from a lens; the lens must be concave.
Reason : The convex lens can give diverging rays.

(d) A is false and R is also false.

Assertion: The focal length of an equiconvex lens of radius of curvature R made of material of refractive index μ = 1.5, is R.
Reason : The focal length of the lens will be R/2.

(c) A is true but R is false.

Assertion (A): When light passes from a rarer medium to a denser medium, it bends towards the normal.
Reason (R): Refraction occurs due to the change in speed of light as it passes from one medium to another.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): The focal length of a concave lens is positive.
Reason (R): A concave lens diverges light rays and forms a virtual image, which requires a positive focal length.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): A convex lens can form both real and virtual images.
Reason (R): A convex lens can form a real image when the object is placed beyond the focal point and a virtual image when the object is placed between the lens and the focal point.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): The magnification produced by a plane mirror is always one.
Reason (R): A plane mirror forms a virtual image that is the same size as the object and at the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): The power of a lens is directly proportional to its focal length.
Reason (R): The power of a lens is defined as the reciprocal of its focal length, and as the focal length increases, the power decreases.

Answer: (c) A is true but R is false.

Assertion (A): A convex lens always forms a real and inverted image for an object placed beyond the focal point.
Reason (R): Beyond the focal point, the light rays converge to form a real image that is inverted.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): The critical angle is the minimum angle of incidence at which total internal reflection occurs.
Reason (R): Total internal reflection occurs when light travels from a denser medium to a rarer medium at an angle greater than the critical angle.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): A convex lens can form a magnified virtual image for an object placed between the lens and its focal point.
Reason (R): For an object placed between the lens and the focal point, the lens forms a virtual image that is magnified and upright.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): A concave lens always forms a virtual and erect image for any object.
Reason (R): The diverging nature of a concave lens causes it to form a virtual and erect image for all object positions.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.

Assertion (A): A real image formed by a convex lens is always inverted.
Reason (R): A real image is formed when light rays actually converge at a point, and this convergence results in an inverted image.

Answer: (a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
